I was standing on the balcony, which faces north. I was on the phone with a friend of mine and had just stepped outside to have a cigarette while we talked. It was July 4, so I had been scanning the horizon all night, looking over the city for fireworks, etc. Over the building across the street to the north of ours, I noted a bright red point of light. It initially reminded me of a firework mortar that glows brightly as it flies into the air, and then disappears, usually just before exploding into a dazzling array. This however, was moving eastward in the sky, at a slight upward angle. It was glowing red, bright and intense. As I tried to focus and pay attention to the detail, it seemed to be obscured by smoke or some form of vapor. A secondary thought was that it was akin to seeing a rocket launch or afterburner takeoff, with a smoke/vapor trail, however, being night time, I could see no trail, only the illuminated cloud near the bright light. As I watched, a white light would pulsate from the object as well, or perhaps it was changing color between red and white, back and forth. But it was a pulse type color change, the each color was just as bright, and there was no discernible pattern of timing. I attempted to use another cell phone to get video, but it was distant enough that I could not get a good view of it. Before it was to move out of my view, when it was just north, of northeast, it began a noticeable arc downward and faded out of sight. There were no other witnesses that I am aware of.
