Traveling west on U.S. 41 just passing the small town if Ishpeming. The owner of the company I work for and myself were heading to our 2nd job of the evening. We had just stopped at a red light (intersection 2nd street and U.S. 41) and were proceeding west. I looked up to see a large "fireball" coming in from the south and streaking across the sky from about the 10 o'clock position and ending at about the 5 o'clock position above the tree line. It lasted about 4 or 5 seconds at most. I pointed it out immediately to John (he was driving) and we both were quite amazed by it. It had a tail that stretched across the sky. The fireball itself was emitting sparks and flames eventually either burning out or we lost sight of it as it fell behind the treeline. It is hard to say how far away it was but having seen airplanes coming in for a landing with their landing lights on as far away as the Keewanaw Peninsula over Lake Superior... which is at least 50 miles... this object seemed closer than that. But as I said there was no reference for distance. It had to be quite large as it was very bright. Neither of us had ever seen anything quite like it in person. Although, I have seen videos of similar fireballs.
