Sighting Details

I went outside to start my car. After I did, I looked up in the sky to observe the stars becuase it was a very clear and cold night. The stars appeared brighter than normal. I looked towards the east and initially saw a meteor streak across the sky and disappear. A few seconds later I saw a bright orange glow which was moving in a south-westerly direction. The object appeared to be very high in altitude, and appeared to be descending based on the flight path. I initially though it was a meteor because the light appeared to be flames. The object then began to slow down and turn in a northly direction. As it did, the flames began to disappear. As the object continued to move in a north direction, the flames completely disappeared. The object then appeared to be the size as one of the stars in the sky. The color of the object then appeared to be either orange or red. It was hard to tell because of the size it became. I continued to track the obejct until I was unable to see it. The object made no noise/sounds. As the object began to get smaller in size, I heard what seemed to be the roar of an airplane. After I lost sight of the object, I looked to the west in the area of where I was hearing the engine, and saw a plane flying in a north direction. There is a military base near by to the south, where military planes constantly fly in and out all times of the day. I am familiar with what airplanes look like and sound like in the sky. I have lived in the area for 30 years. I did not have a camera to record the event.
